A service of Bus on Demand is a new model of transportation based on the concept
of a tailored ride with a starting and an ending point previously agreed by the
user and the company. This new model aims to be a more economical and ecological
alternative.
Our problem consists on deciding if it is feasible to implement this new model
in a concrete region. For that, a real-time simulation approach is considered by
means of tool called Unique Simulation Engine (USE) with a modular structure.
These modules handle, for example, the generation of potential service requests
by using the available data to feed forecasting models of event demand. The
computation of all possible combinations of optimal routes is also considered
and the USE is responsible of the choice through an utility function of the one
that best suits the service requirements using a genetic algorithm.
All together it allows to extract a series of indicators that help to decide if
the change is useful or not.
