Artificial Intelligence is experiencing a phenomenal exponential growth and is impacting all domains from domestic and industrial to scientific. The scientific activity has certainly became more computational, and Health Sciences are no exception.
However, promises from the industry and influential media claim that Artificial Intelligence are actually rendering the very scientific method obsolete. While this can be attributed to an overly enthusiastic marketing, governments and research institutions are concentrating enormous amounts of resources in computational infrastructures, often designed and controlled by a handful of leading companies.
In this talk I will try to disentangle the desirable roles of AI and Biostatistics in the Health Sciences. I will use some simple examples to hopefully demonstrate why the Scientific Method is still absolutely crucial and why appropriate statistical modelling should still be considered the tool of reference for learning from observations.
