Route optimization methods offer an opportunity to the fishing industry to enhance their efficiency, sustainability and safety. However, the use of decision support systems in the optimization of routes, which have been widely used in the shipping industry, is limited in the case of the fishery. This talk is divided into two parts. First, a review about the main methods developed for route optimization in shipping industry is presented, classifying them according to the type of algorithm and the aim pursued in each case, and we highlight the existing gap in the application of most of these techniques to fishing routes. Second, the fishing route scheduling problem is described as the union of two combinatorial optimization subproblems and, in order to solve it, a metaheuristic algorithm is proposed. We discuss the performance and utility of this algorithm by applying it to Basque fleets, as a case study.
