Many empirical and descriptive models have been proposed for the development of mathematical models for the human athletic performance of individual runners. Those models were mostly focused on explaining world records, or understanding the performance related to physiological parameters of the athletes (e.g. maximal oxygen uptake, blood lactate concentration, or the anaerobic threshold).
This work is developed in collaboration with Runnea Academy, an individualized training system that combines the knowledge of personal trainers with technology. We develop a recreational runners’ performance model based on the concept of training-impulse (TRIMP) used to quantify the training load and the rate of perceived exertion (PRE) that helps people manage the intensity of their physical exercise. The modelling approach allows for detecting recreational runners’ profiles and monitoring their performance during a running training programme for 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon race distances.
