The increasing use of zero-emissions vehicles, and in particular road electric vehicles and unmanned electric vehicles, is a fundamental concept in order to promote sustainability in smart cities. Still, the battery limitations of these vehicles, together with their long charging times, impose driving-range constraints in routing plans for fleets of electric vehicles. In this work, we analyze different optimization problems of electric vehicles that consider the aforementioned driving-range limitations, including vehicle routing problems, arc routing problems, and team orienteering problems. In addition, we will discuss how novel approaches such as agile-optimization algorithms and simheuristics can be employed to take into account highly dynamic scenarios and scenarios under uncertainty, which are frequent in real-life applications.
