Neuronal activity, electrocardiograms or circadian gene expression are just a few examples governed by oscillatory processes. Standard methods, such as Fourier decomposition, are not always suitable for the analysis of complex oscillatory signals especially nonsinusoidal shapes. Recently our research group have proposed a novel model called Frequency modulated Möbius (FMM) flexible enough to describe from sinusoidal to very asymmetric rhythmic patterns. FMM model is defined as a signal plus error model with a nonlineal parametric signal and gaussian noise.
Here, we present the FMM package, an R user-friendly software to enhance the use of FMM models. FMM is downloadable from the Comprehensive R Archive Network and includes all required functions to fit and explore single and multicomponent oscillatory signals. Moreover, it allows incorporating additional information in terms of constraints on the model parameters, generating synthetic data or visualizing the fitting process results.
